Summary - 4

In this lesson, we discus the shape and content of a paragraph.

1. Elements of a Paragraph

"Computer device is very necessary today. Nearly all institutions can not dispense with it. In these institutions one finds a whole room full of computer devices put on desks, behind which sits a number of officers working in hustle and bustle. In business, it is used to keep accounts, and to engage in electronic commercial transactions. Written records in paper files are no more used in business. Education is widely elaborated through using computer to make studies from distances. Students today receive their lessons from distant countries through this device. In science and military operations computer is exploited to perform medical diagnosis and sending drones respectively. A doctor or an army can rely too much on computer.  Another major use for computer lies in scanning worldwide internet web."

Discussion:

The paragraph is opened with a key sentence: "Computer device is very necessary today." It summarizes the paragraph, i.e. it gives the gist or main idea, so it is called "the key sentence".

The other sentences, or the remaining part of the paragraph explains this sentence or elaborates (enlarge) the idea of the paragraph. The rest of the paragraph gives examples of how "the computer device" is necessary. It shows (how, why, when, where, etc) this key sentence holds true.

Therefore, when writing a summary, we look first for the theme which is usually compressed in "the key sentence". Around this sentence we find the most supportive ideas or sentences.

Note:

1- The paragraph discusses one main idea which is part of an overall topic.

2- A paragraph contains a key sentence, which may be at the beginning, middle or end

         of this paragraph.

3- In the paragraph above, the fist sentence is the key sentence.

4- The underlined words in bold type give the main points.

5- Around these points more ideas are built in sentences.
